Tellinidae - Tellininae: Tellinides margaritinus  (Lamarck, 1818) ('pearly tellin')  

Synonym(s): margaritina Lamarck, 1818 mariae Tenison-Woods, 1876 umbonella Lamarck, 1818 modestina auct., non Tate, 1891 australiensis Thiele, 1930.

Figures a-c: 25 mm, Flinders Island, TAS (N), coll. S. Grove.

Typical shell-length 25 mm.  Lives subtidally in sand and mud, especially in sheltered environments.  Native. Endemic to southeastern and southwestern Australia (TAS, VIC, SA and WA).  In Tasmanian waters, this is a widespread species but local and seldom common.
